We hope you enjoyed the holiday season and want to welcome you all into 2023. If there is a theme this year for us at Change Washington, it’s “change things for the better.”

The opportunity is there. Polling repeatedly demonstrates Seattle voters are tired of the status quo, and their numbers wanting change continues to increase. Moreover, despite their dour outlook on the city’s state of affairs, they share our optimism that things can indeed change.

That change applies to all sorts of things we care about, including homelessness, public safety, adding more police officers, and of course City Hall. By the end of the year, we want things in all those areas to see improvement and genuine progress. We want to see fewer homeless camps and crimes, more officers on the street, people feeling safer downtown and in their neighborhoods and better decision-making by the City Council.

Change with all those fundamentally means holding public officials accountable to the people for their (in)actions on these issues, whether they’re elected or not. Ultimately, if someone is collecting taxpayer dollars, they’re accountable to the taxpayers. 

But this is a group effort, not an individual one. That means the voices of many should be reflected through Change Washington.

Where do you want to see Change the most? Whether it’s fewer drug camps or a reduction in shootings or in property crime, we want to know what your priorities are.

Your feedback will help shape the course of our work at Change Washington in 2023, and  beyond. These are the places where we will be watching to see if public officials are trying to fix the problem, make it worse, or just do nothing and hope nobody notices.

With your help and input, we will keep reminding them that we notice, and that’s not going to change until the situation with violent crime and drug camps does first.

Last year we saw what was possible when we stand together and either demand positive change or pushback against destructive proposals, such as the Chinatown-International District homeless megaplex. Yet, there’s much more work to be done on other matters that, although directly connected, affect each other.
